Ballarat’s Drive-In Theatre to Resume from November 5th
Showbiz Cinemas is pleased to announce that the Ballarat Showgrounds will again play host to Ballarat’s drive-in Theatre. Last year was the first time Ballarat had seen a local drive-in cinema operation since the closure of the Southern Drive-In in 1991. The ‘retro initiative’ has been made in conjunction with the Ballarat Agricultural & Pastoral Society (BAPS) and will operate each weekend from November 5th.
Customers will be able to tune into the film’s soundtrack via their FM radio in their cars. Tickets will all be available via the Showbiz Cinemas Ballarat website. A full candy bar with popcorn, choc top ice-creams, confectionery will also be available.
To comply with a COVID-Safe environment, all tickets will be completed online. Tickets are now on sale and given the anticipated popularity and capped number of vehicles permitted into the screening area, customers are encouraged to purchase early.
Showbiz Group Director, Chris Jones says “we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring this concept back this spring and summer after continued difficult times for our community. We understand the reopening of the drive-in this season will be one of the first major events in Ballarat since the easing of restrictions and what better way to enjoy a social-outing, watching a movie on the big screen, whilst still being able to maintain physical distancing”.
Elizabeth van Beek, Executive Officer of the Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society, said “Given the cancellation of many events including the Ballarat Show for a second year in a row, we are thrilled to again partner with a local cinema company to bring something positive, fun and entertaining to the community.
John Bourke, who used to work both of Ballarat’s previous drive-ins in the 1970’s and 1980’s has come on board again to assist with the operation. “During these COVID times, we have seen many instances of drive-in theatres start to re-emerge. The notion of having the drive-in back up and running for a second season again in Ballarat is indeed very exciting”, said Mr. Bourke.
